Nokchallah in Österreich

In her role as an after-school caregiver at a primary school in Graz, the author of Russian descent was confronted daily with the challenges faced by migrant children in the Austrian school system. Particularly, the children from Chechen refugee families, for whom Austria has been a primary refuge since 2000, exemplified the failures of integration. A common language—Russian, which is still spoken in Chechnya despite everything—enabled the author to gain insight into individual fates that are often marginalized and overlooked under the label "children with behavioral issues." This work is an attempt to provide the reader with an insight into the history, society, and traditions of Chechnya; to examine the moral development of children who must bridge the gap between the values and norms they need to adapt to in school and the traditions of their homeland, as well as the expectations of their parents, in order to facilitate a conflict-free and effective school experience in the spirit of integration.
