Product details
Gilles Chaillet (1946–2011), a French illustrator and screenwriter inspired by history and Italy, created the character Vasco, a Sienese who embarks on adventures in the mid-14th century. This was a time when chivalry was fading, yet the Renaissance had not yet begun. The true masters of medieval Europe were patrons, merchants, and bankers like Tolomeo Tolomei. He sensed the shifting winds of history and involved his nephew Vasco in political and financial intrigues. Real events intertwine with fiction and adventure. Vasco finds himself at the courts of Italy, France, and England. While in Paris on his uncle Tolomei's business, Vasco accidentally overhears a conversation among conspirators. The life of the French King John the Good is in danger, as is that of the young banker himself.
The famous Dutch cultural historian Johan Huizinga described the 14th and 15th centuries in his book "The Autumn of the Middle Ages" not so much as the prelude to the coming Renaissance, but as the end of the Middle Ages, as an era in which medieval thought reaches the last stage of its life, like a tree with overripe fruit that has not yet fully developed.
Gilles Chaillet perfectly depicts the culture and lifestyle of that time, revealing customs, attitudes toward art, religion, and the mentality of the people of that era. Thanks to his extensive knowledge, he illustrates characteristic elements of the period in his drawings. This edition includes three original albums ("Beelzebub's Gravedigger," "Spells," "The Ghost of Bruges") as well as supplements that showcase the behind-the-scenes work of the comic.
