Product details

A hike from the westernmost to the easternmost point of Germany, in search of answers to the question: "How do Germans live?" In the 25th year of reunification, photojournalist Dirk Gebhardt has trekked in eleven stages from Isenbruch in the west to Zentendorf in the east. He has met monks in monasteries, foresters, local historians, country doctors, goat herders, people living in mobile homes, mayors, artists, refugees, and farmers. He has spent the night with them in guest rooms, caravans, or hunting lodges. Observing the everyday lives of these individuals with attention and empathy, he documents their hopes, doubts, and desires. The result is a social report on the Conditio Humana of Germans at the beginning of the 21st century, captured in 191 photographs. The images and texts are complemented by diagrams presenting statistical data on topics such as demographic change.
