Niedersächsisches Ortsnamenbuch / Die Ortsnamen des Landkreises Uelzen

In the district of Uelzen, 275 place names are documented before 1600, bearing witness to a multi-layered landscape of names. Around 40 of these names are of Slavic origin, 36 refer to deserted settlements. The origin of the place names is influenced by various factors: the natural features of the landscape (waters, forests, hills, soil conditions), the settlement activities of the people and finally by the people themselves, whose personal names are contained in numerous place names. The book presents each name in critically selected and verified historical evidence, ranging from the first mention to the current form, and offers a linguistically sound interpretation. It is of interest to those interested in the history of languages, names, regional history and cultural geography, as well as to all those concerned with the history of their homeland. The volume is a further building block for research into the settlement name landscape of Lower Saxony as part of the research project 'Place names between the Rhine and Elbe'.
