Life at Hailsham boarding school seems unremarkable: friendships are formed, conflicts arise, relationships begin— in short, the students experience a normal adolescence. However, there are also other aspects of life in this place. Mysterious events like the annual bazaar, one of the few times the children have contact with the outside world, or vague hints about the special fate of each student at this school— the idyllic setting does not seem to be what it promises.

Many years after leaving Hailsham, former student Kathy reflects on her time there and gradually begins to reveal the dark secret that surrounds this place, both for herself and for the reader.

Recommended for high school graduation in the fields of genetic engineering and medical ethics, as well as coming of age.
