Neubau

Neubau, once the "headquarters of Viennese industry," is the subject of this unique photo book. As recently as 150 years ago, parts of Neubau, which includes the oldest suburb in the world, were referred to as "Brillantengrund." This name was derived from the proverbial wealth of many silk manufacturers and ribbon producers whose production facilities were located here. The diverse life in Neubau, balancing work and leisure, is vividly documented with around 200 photographs, mostly from the collection of the district museum. Historian and museologist Heinz Jankowsky has been overseeing the Neubau district museum for several years, located at Spittelberg, which itself has historical significance. It is a Biedermeier house and was also the birthplace of the Biedermeier painter Friedrich von Amerling. This photo book invites readers to remember, rediscover, and explore anew.
