This is not a book about horse training; it is a book about human training. Don't think you only need to train your horse. More likely, you need to train yourself to be more systematic and, as a result, more effective. What I want to offer you on the pages of this book is a philosophy that I call Natural Horsemanship. The dynamics of horsemanship can be achieved quite naturally through communication, understanding, and psychology. That is what I want to share with you in this book. In contrast, traditional horsemanship is sometimes achieved through mechanics, fear, and intimidation.
There are some books that should be read over and over again, and this is one of them. With each reading, it becomes easier to grasp the principles and goals behind the idea of Natural Horsemanship. With every reading, you discover new insights in the same words on the same pages and ultimately fully internalize what Pat Parelli wants to convey. This book is a combination of concepts and practical exercises. These exercises or maneuvers have been designed to help you understand the concepts more comprehensively and communicate with your horse more effectively at this level.
The book is divided into three sections: Natural Horsemanship - An Overview, Natural Horsemanship - On the Ground, Natural Horsemanship - In the Saddle. Each section utilizes the six keys that Pat has identified as vital for developing into a Natural Horse-Man. Just as a flower opens its petals, each key in all three sections opens doors for us until the core of Natural Horsemanship becomes visible in its complexity.
