Product details
In the Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve lies an ancient forest. For centuries, it has resisted all attempts to convert it into arable or pasture land. Today, the Grumsin is one of the last historically old forest sites in Germany. Dominated by the European beech and noted for its natural characteristics, it has been recognized by UNESCO as part of the World Heritage site "Ancient Beech Forests of Germany," alongside four other areas. This book describes the historical development, the Grumsin's placement within the Baltic young moraine landscape, its intriguing hunting history, and the flora and fauna. Here is the highest lake in Brandenburg. Nowhere in Germany do cranes breed in such density as in the secluded forest moors of Grumsin. The book highlights its significance as a research site for natural forest development and the management of beech forests. It also recounts the history of the people in the villages and their relationship with this charming landscape, which piques the reader's curiosity about the surroundings. The uniqueness of Grumsin within the ensemble of the five UNESCO World Heritage beech forests in Germany lies in its intimate connection of forest, water, and moor. Additionally, it features a relief that is unexpectedly steep for a lowland area. Thus, the immense biological diversity of this 590-hectare forest area is not surprising. It includes tips for excursions and hikes.
