At a time of the brutal dismantling of all forms of nationality, when new states are engaged in research into their national sentiment, and old states are recognizing the flamboyance of nationalism, one can only turn to Eric Hobsbawm to help us understand the last century in light of the present. The historian is at pains to analyze the tribulations of the concept from a fresh perspective, having realized that they are not based on ideas, but on a multitude of historical, social, and local nationalisms, where the part of the myth is inextricably linked to that of reality. This history is full of noise, fury, and song, but the peak—one of the originalities of the book to support it—is probably already over.
