In 2011, photographer York Hovest accompanied the Dalai Lama during his visit to Germany. During this encounter, he promised to portray his country and show the world what it looks like today. After a year of preparation for this nearly impossible journey, York Hovest set out on a breathtaking expedition: he traveled through Tibet for a hundred days—on foot, by motorcycle, and by car. Time and again, he ventured into hard-to-reach and forbidden areas that few visitors ever access. This endeavor was only possible with the active help of the Tibetans, who allowed him to share in their lives and placed great trust in him. York Hovest accompanied them to secret locations, reaching the limits of his physical endurance and that of his camera equipment at 6,000 meters in temperatures of minus 30 degrees. In impressive images, he captures not only the sublime landscape but also the soul of this mysterious land through moving portraits of Tibetan nomads and monks.
