Jerusalem, during the time of the Crusades around 1192: A young Templar knight saves Recha, the daughter of the Jewish merchant Nathan, from a fire. Subsequently, Sultan Saladin poses the most difficult question to Nathan: Which religion is the one true faith? Nathan responds with the famous parable of the three rings, but will that satisfy the Sultan? Furthermore, Nathan is unaware that the Christian Patriarch of Jerusalem and a Muslim captain are plotting against him.
