Narzissmus, Perfektionismus und Aggression bei Polizeibeamten

We use the term 'narcissism' to describe an inability to love that is caused by two things. The first reason is the infant's inability to develop beyond the point where it begins to perceive its mother as separate from itself. Unlike the Narcissus from mythology, our narcissist despises himself. His anger has nowhere to go. It has no outlet because he and his frustrating mother are one. His inner reality and the world around him are the same. Secondly, to the extent that he has separated from his mother, he fears that his all-powerful rage will destroy both her and himself. To protect his own life, he turns his anger against himself, thereby preserving his mother, who sustains him, from destruction. This is referred to as 'narcissistic defense' and highlights the part of the Narcissus myth that shows how Narcissus's preoccupation with himself leads to his destruction, even though it is described more as self-love than self-hatred. However, the Narcissus myth assumes a patient who is further developed than the one we are treating. In our understanding, Narcissus cannot be cured through enlightenment. He is not a fool; he is a victim.
