The barrier protects brain tissue from toxic substances that enter the bloodstream. Although it plays an important role in survival through this mechanism, it is considered a significant barrier to the administration of drugs to the brain. Many potentially useful drugs, such as cell division inhibitors and medications for the central nervous system, cannot overcome the barrier or do not reach the brain in adequate amounts. Nanoparticles are solid colloidal particles ranging in size from 1 to 1000 nm (typically 200 to 300 nm) and are considered a useful system for targeted drug delivery.
