The barrier protects brain tissue from toxic substances that enter the bloodstream. Although it plays an important role in survival through this mechanism, it is considered a significant barrier to the administration of drugs to the brain. Many medications cannot pass through it, and it prevents a sufficient amount of drugs from reaching the brain. Many potentially useful drugs, such as cell division inhibitors and medications for the central nervous system, cannot overcome the barrier or do not reach the brain in adequate amounts. However, for therapeutic purposes, certain methods are needed to enhance the availability of drugs in the brain and their delivery to its tissue. One possible way to achieve this goal is by binding drugs to nanoparticles, allowing them to pass through the barrier accordingly. Nanoparticles are solid colloidal particles ranging in size from 1 to 1000 nm (typically 200 to 300 nm) and are considered a useful system for targeted drug delivery.
