Private investigator Berndorf is investigating a case of his own. While searching for forgotten authors, retired teacher Nadja Schwertfeger discovers a story about the end of the war in 1945 at an antiquarian bookstore. Hours before the US Army's invasion, locals, refugees, and scattered soldiers in a small village listen together to the radio broadcast of Hitler's 56th birthday. When the power goes out, the gathering spirals out of control. Nadja stumbles upon a strange detail: the description of a black fabric cat with pink paws. She herself owns such a cat - the only connection to her mother, whom she had to leave with another woman after the war. Nadja begins to investigate. Did such a village really exist? Soon, she finds evidence. However, no one there wants to talk to her. Eventually, she is referred to someone.
