Product details

Rambutan is an important exotic fruit native to Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. It is a good source of vitamin C and calcium and provides a fairly good amount of niacin, iron, phosphorus, carbohydrates, protein, and fiber. The main issue with marketing rambutan is the shrinking and browning of the spores and pericarp, which makes them unattractive, although the seed remains edible. After harvest, the appearance of rambutan deteriorates rapidly within two to three days if stored at room temperature. Browning due to high transpiration, high respiration rate, and decay are the main causes of quality deterioration in rambutan. Although rambutan has good demand and significant export potential, it is not a major commercial fruit primarily due to its seasonal availability and short shelf life. Therefore, suitable post-harvest practices can extend the shelf life of rambutan by preserving nutrient quality and increasing the availability of the fruit for domestic and distant markets.
