Nach Ohio

In 1891, the then 19-year-old Stephanie Cordelier emigrates from the Basel region to the USA. Coming from a poor background—her mother supports the family as a washerwoman, and her father is an alcoholic—she hopes for a better life in the New World. In Ohio, she gets to know American daily life in the burgeoning small town of Defiance. She becomes a maid for a family of doctors, begins to feel at home, and is proud to be able to send money to her mother regularly. Then fate turns against her. But Stephanie has learned to fight. 125 years later, her great-grandson, living in Bern, decides to trace her story. He travels across the Atlantic by container ship and then by bicycle to Ohio to find out what Stephanie Cordelier really experienced.
