You don't have to be a Joseph Beuys connoisseur to make sense of his "smallest notes." An unbound notebook in the form of flying leaves and slips of paper, they can always be read beyond the context of the artistic work as independent texts, text images. Conceptual study, philosophical reflection, poetic fragment, and political treatise designate the space in which the notations move, without worrying about definitions of literary genres. What connects them through more than four decades and across different work phases is not so much a specific form as their author's unflagging interest in focusing and advancing his own thinking in the course of writing it down. Graphically and in terms of gesture, some of the work is reminiscent of the symbolic and conceptual mapping of the world by Swedenborg or Jakob Böhme, for example, to whom Beuys referred.
