Mutter, Muse und Frau Bauhaus

It is not Walter Gropius who is in the spotlight in this story (he put himself in the limelight throughout his life), but his mother, mistress, wife and whatever other female beings there were in the master's circle. But don't worry - Ursula Muscheler doesn't look coyly through the keyhole at all too private scenes, but behind the scenes of the great architect at his beloved, clever, educated, energetic assistants: Manon Gropius, Alma Mahler, Lily Hildebrandt, Maria Benemann and Ise Gropius. Behind every successful man is a strong woman, as the saying goes. That these extremely talented women were overshadowed by Gropius and other men throughout their lives is the unfortunate punch line of this affectionate sketch.
