The textbook "Multiple System Atrophy" provides a comprehensive monograph on multiple system atrophy (MSA), a rare and fatal neurodegenerative disease. MSA is characterized by autonomic dysfunction and can present either with parkinsonism (MSA-P) or cerebellar ataxia (MSA-C). The underlying neuropathology of MSA is marked by striatonigral degeneration, olivopontocerebellar atrophy, and distinctive oligodendroglial cytoplasmic alpha-synuclein inclusions. MSA is therefore classified among the alpha-synucleinopathies, which also include Parkinson's disease and pure autonomic failure. Significant advances have been made in the past decade in early diagnosis, research into the pathogenesis, and clinical trials. This book is aimed at movement disorder specialists as well as basic neuroscientists interested in degenerative movement disorders.
