The Leitners only have snails leaving slime trails in their garden. Charlotte, the youngest, realizes early on that she has less than other children. Above all, she is constantly reminded of what she lacks: a father. It is the mother who keeps everything running. Until one day, an aneurysm bursts in her brain. The consequences: a 50% disability, termination, unemployment office. The two adult half-siblings move out, an alcoholic man moves in, and Charlotte has to come to terms with the fact that her family now fits even less into the value system of the conservative small town than before. Many have struggled with social classes, and Annemarie Andre tackles this in her debut novel 'Nacktschnecken' with a clever twist: from the perspective of a child who takes the world as it is, does not compare it, does not judge it, and makes her mother, who is not like other mothers, look good in the process - this demonstrates great sensitivity and is truly remarkable.
