Product details

April 9, national day of remembrance in Tbilisi, Georgia. Gena tries to cope with another day in his failed life. His wife Mila, who has lost all hope for her husband, plans a future without him. Daughter Zema, who works at the police, decides that revenge is her only life goal. Son Lazare wants to become a rapper and represents leftist ideals, but is suddenly forced to abandon his principles. Iwa Pesuaschwili depicts the fate of the Armenian Simonyan family, who flee to Tbilisi from the war in Karabakh in the 90s, into a city full of corruption, violence, and dirty politics. The plot unfolds over the course of a single day, during which all conflicts, dramas, and challenges simultaneously crash down on the family. Moreover, the demons from their past begin to awaken, preventing them from making rational decisions. Pesuaschwili's novel is a family saga condensed into one day and four characters, from whose hourly shifting perspectives and streams of thought a dynamic portrayal of post-Soviet reality emerges. The Soviet garbage dump, with its "bitingly stinking dragon maw," becomes a symbol of the slowly decaying communist mentality.
