In October 1777, the 21-year-old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart traveled to Augsburg for two weeks on his way to Paris. Marianne Thekla Mozart, the 'Augsburg Bäsle', accompanied her cousin on most of his ventures. A small romance developed between them. The famous 'Bäsle letters' testify to the young Mozart's infatuation with his cousin, which for a long time were only published in excerpts due to their directness, drastic, and often coarse language.
