This foundational work provides a clear and practical introduction to the mechanical design of internal combustion engines. It is aimed at students of mechanical engineering and automotive technology, but its easily understandable format also makes it suitable for car and motorcycle enthusiasts as well as hobbyists in general.

The book focuses on conveying mechanical and mathematical fundamentals as well as practical design knowledge. The thermodynamic processes in engines are deliberately excluded.

• Functionality and categorization of internal combustion engines (focus on gasoline engines)
• Two-stroke and four-stroke engines with their respective characteristics
• Mechanical components of an engine: crankshaft and connecting rod, bearings and lubrication, pistons and cylinders, valves and camshaft
• Additional auxiliary units such as ignition systems, starters, and carburetors
• Design and calculation of key components up to their specification
• Construction of camshafts

In addition, the book contains numerous practical examples. These include constructive engine improvements and self-designed simple engines. All presented DIY projects were built by the author himself and tested in a laboratory. This way, aspiring engineers gain valuable workshop experience, which also considers the use of lathes, milling machines, and welding equipment. Supplementary videos on the design and manufacturing of engines complement the content.
