Motivational Interviewing (Miller & Rollnick, 2015) is a directive yet client-centered approach that focuses on an equal dialogue about change. To stimulate the client's motivation, the therapist initiates a loud reflection on change – known as change talk – and also seeks to diminish the resistance to the status quo (sustain talk). In addition to the client's motivation, the therapist must keep several other prerequisites for successful treatment in mind: building a trusting relationship (engaging), clarifying treatment goals (focusing), and preparing for behavior change (planning). Miller and Rollnick (2015) describe various ways to meet these challenges. For example, a shared look at the agenda mapping chart facilitates the agreement on treatment goals in mutual consent, the value card sort directs the conversation towards the motives for change, and the assessment of self-confidence on the Z-scale (confidence ruler) can initiate the planning of the first steps. The work aids for therapy and counseling provide, for the first time, a German-language collection of these and other tools. They complement the standard work by Miller and Rollnick (2015) and facilitate application in therapy and counseling.
