A fascinating hero, a vast panorama. Warsaw 1939: Lieutenant Konstanty Willemann, a bon vivant and dandy before the war, wanders through the bombed city where the German occupation stifles all freedom. Konstanty, who is of German descent on his father's side, is torn between his tumultuous life filled with wild nights and his concern for the future of his wife and young son. But then Konstanty joins the resistance. Well disguised and speaking flawless German, he undertakes increasingly risky actions and discovers a frighteningly different side of himself. A conspiratorial journey with the inscrutable noblewoman Dzidzia takes him through a hellish landscape of devastation to the still intact Budapest. The journey becomes a test for Konstanty to see if he can escape the doom that has engulfed Warsaw and threatens to drag him down as well.
