Marina Tsvetaeva is regarded as one of the strongest and formally demanding authors of European modernism. Consequently, her work is challenging to translate. Bold breaks and the primacy of sound complicate definitive meaning-making, but they also provoke it. Erotic ecstasy, the chaos of war, emigration, natural bliss, and urban horror are just a few of the emotionally charged semantic spaces that her poetry navigates, oscillating between strict artistry and exuberant enthusiasm. Felix Philipp Ingold is guided in his translation approaches by the melodic and rhythmic dynamics of the original poems, aiming to release comparable energies in the target language. Through a careful yet distinctly idiosyncratic reconstruction of the Russian texts, the poet-translator is able to bring their open potential for meaning to life with the highest intensity. This selection includes numerous first translations (some from unpublished works) as well as radical new versions of canonical masterpieces, serving as emphatic testimonies to the wealth of possibilities that Marina Tsvetaeva's singular poetry can offer when read in German today.
