Product details

In 1932, the young Marcel Breuer created his architectural debut: a residential house for the Harnischmacher family in Wiesbaden. Breuer, who had previously gained fame primarily for his furniture design, translates this reputation into architecture here. After the war, the now world-renowned professor of architecture builds a new residence for the same family on the same site: House Harnischmacher II. Unlike its predecessor, however, this project remains largely overlooked. The authors of "More than Just a House!" provide an in-depth account of this project's history for the first time—unfolding a narrative that spans from the Weimar Republic through National Socialism to the post-war period and the Federal Republic of Germany, which has not been fully told until now. The fourth volume of the CCSA Topics series from the Center for Critical Studies in Architecture showcases Breuer's design philosophy, his integration of furniture and architectural design as a central theme, and ultimately the house as evidence of his departure from modernism in the context of his work as an architect in the USA.
