In her novel, Margaret Atwood takes us deep into her own life: She tells the story of Nell, depicting her intelligent, resourceful, yet cool mother, her father, an entomologist, and her much younger, capricious, and psychologically unstable sister. When Nell leaves her parents' home, she earns her first money as a freelance editor. She meets the man of her life, Tig, who is still married to Oona and has two sons. Tig can only slowly detach himself from this marriage, until Oona eventually brings Tig and Nell together, but then cannot bear the consequences of her actions.
