In social discourse and in media perception, the church and theology appear primarily when the moral foundations of coexistence are at stake. They make their voices heard in public statements, through social words, or with memoranda. Current examples are the debates about the refugee crisis, euthanasia, sexual ethics, climate change, and financial capitalism. In the face of this tendency, the church and theology should strive less to standardize behavior than to strengthen the ability to form one's own judgments on ethical issues. It is a misunderstanding of themselves if the churches see themselves as moral agencies. The contributions in this volume aim, among other things, to provide answers to the questions: How does the Gospel's claim to truth relate to the communication of values in and for this society? Are the church and theology tempted to ignore the relevance of the Gospel?
