At the beginning of 2008, Andrea Vogel from Grisons undertakes an extraordinary expedition through the largest desert on earth: the Sahara. The starting point is the legendary city of Timbuktu in Mali, and the destination is the trading city of Marrakesh in Morocco. In between lies one of the most fascinating and unknown landscapes of our planet. This south/north crossing was the most important trade caravan route from Black Africa to Europe in the Middle Ages. On the historic route, the border crosser covers over 3000 km; among other things, over the earth's heat pole, through Erg Chech, one of the largest sand seas on our planet, and over the mountain Jebel Toubkal, at 4167m the highest peak in North Africa.
