Product details

This book is an autobiographical work by Nicolas Edme Restif de la Bretonne, first published in 1796-1797. The translator remains unknown. Nicolas Edme Restif de la Bretonne, also known as Rétif de la Bretonne (1734 - 1806), was a French novelist and a pioneer of Verism and Naturalism. In German-speaking countries, the spelling 'Retif' predominates, while 'Restif' is used in the rest of the world. Rétif de la Bretonne is often regarded as merely a pornographer. However, he actually provided a counterpoint to Sade's portrayal of the aristocracy in his candid depictions of the lower classes. De Sade was an opponent of Rétif. His sexual fixation on shoes, described in the novel Le Pied de Fanchette, led to the term Retifism being used for this type of fetishism. Among his most eccentric ideas was the proposal to legally mandate the marriage of all 16-year-old men to 32-year-old women. After 16 years, these marriages should automatically be dissolved, allowing for another younger spouse to be taken. Similar ideas have also been expressed by Arthur Schopenhauer. As a chronicler of the morals of the French Revolutionary period, he has been recognized by Iwan Bloch. Rétif could boast of being the most-read (French) author across the Rhine. Warning: this is an erotic classic of world literature, not pornography in the modern sense.
