Herbal medicines are used worldwide. In most developing countries, especially in rural areas, local traditional medicine, including herbalism, is the only source of healthcare for people. In industrialized countries, alternative medicine, including the use of dietary supplements, is aggressively marketed alongside claims of traditional medicine. Most products made from medicinal plants have not been tested for their safety and efficacy. The products marketed in industrialized countries and provided by traditional healers in the developing world have varied in quality and sometimes contained harmful contaminants. The purpose of the monographs is to provide information on the safety, efficacy, and quality control/assurance of widely used medicinal plants to facilitate their appropriate use in a diverse healthcare system.
