Product details

Monospaced fonts go back to the typewriter and are characterised by the special feature of the equal width of all letters, figures and characters. Mono is the new Black focuses on the function and aesthetics of this unique typeface and looks at its cult status in the (mainly) young design scene. The aim of the handbook is to inform and inspire typographers, font developers, designers and those interested in culture with facts, analyses, expert positions and practical examples as well as a comprehensive collection of typefaces.
Beginning with a cultural-historical outline, the author analyses the aspects of type history and makes it clear how closely interwoven type, technical progress and social development are. Selected examples of work, designers and agencies from around the world form the middle section, focussing on the wide range of possible applications. The final section is a font compendium, which clearly summarises 175 monospaced fonts and shows the changes that this distinctive font has undergone, from machine type to completely digitally developed coding fonts.
