Alexandre Émile John Yersin was born on 22 September 1863 in Aubonne in the canton of Vaud. He was a French-Swiss physician, bacteriologist, and explorer, known for the discovery of the plague bacillus, the preparation of the first anti-plague serum, and the study of diphtheria toxin. He died on 28 February 1943 in Nha Trang, in French Indochina.
