Henning Mankell, born in 1948 in Härjedalen, is one of the most respected and widely read authors in Sweden. Since the late 1960s, he has worked as a writer, theater director, and artistic director. In Germany alone, the total print run of his books has reached 11 million. His works have been translated into over 20 languages. For his extensive body of work, Mankell has received numerous awards, including those from the Swedish Academy for Crime Literature, the German Youth Literature Prize (1993), the Astrid Lindgren Prize (1996), the Corinne Prize in 2001 and 2002, as well as the German Book Prize (2003). Henning Mankell lives in Maputo, Mozambique, where he runs the Teatro Avenida. Several of the Wallander novels have been adapted into films.
