Mönchengladbach anders sehen

Photo books on the theme of home must continually be created anew, as we perceived our home differently yesterday and approached it with different expectations than we do today. Additionally, there is the unique nature of the medium of photography, whose special aesthetics should also be highlighted – more so for some subjects than for others. We have found that the official representation of the city of Mönchengladbach has so far lacked perspectives on neighborhood and everyday life. A compilation of photographic imagery, apart from tourism, city marketing, and past sentimentalism or folklore, is certainly a valuable addition to the spectrum of photo books about Mönchengladbach. To realize this project, the Geschichtswerkstatt has teamed up with Hannah von Dahlen from the project MG anders sehen. This photo book presents Mönchengladbach in a different light. Since we believe that there is no singular image of the city of Mönchengladbach, and that it cannot be found in an imagined homogeneous normality, our project can only aim to artistically stage Mönchengladbach in its diverse normality. This is based on a positive identification with an experienced and approachable Mönchengladbach – as exemplified by the project MG anders sehen. What makes this city livable and lovable? What does it have to offer? Perhaps not at first glance, but upon further inspection. The new photo book seeks to provide a visual answer to exactly these questions.
