Models of Bilingual Education

The academic book "Models of Bilingual Education" examines the application of dual and parallel instruction in two historically disadvantaged schools in the Western Cape province of South Africa. The study is based on a master's thesis written at the University of the Western Cape and questions the implementation of bilingual education in a post-apartheid context. Two central assumptions are tested: first, that parallel instruction often uses only one language of learning and teaching in practice, leading to a monolingual teaching practice. Second, that while dual instruction offers the best path to bilingualism, it is applied inconsistently in practice, resulting in a loss of educational and linguistic benefits. The findings of this investigation provide valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities of bilingual education in disadvantaged communities.
