"Mobilities in India" is an academic book that addresses the topic of commuting as a new paradigm in mobility research within the context of the Global South. It examines commuting by suburban trains in East India and interprets it not only as a means of work but also as a process that creates a kinetic event space permeated by various mobile practices. These practices are not determined by their local fixation but can be cognitively grasped. The book analyzes the role of commuting by suburban trains in the urban expansion of Kolkata and the transformation of rural spaces into urban ones. A significant contribution of the book lies in explaining the experiences of commuters and creating spatial fluidity in the time capsule context of commuting. Additionally, it explores the subjective reality of gendered commuting. It employs a transdisciplinary research design that combines quantitative and ethnographic methods, offering valuable insights into mobility studies, transport studies, urban geography, and regional planning.
