Domestic violence affects not only the family member who is subjected to abuse, usually the mother, but also the children who witness, hear, or are confronted with its consequences, growing up in an environment marked by violence. The perspective of the children, as recounted retrospectively by young adults, is the focus of this book. It summarizes the theoretical background and reports on the current state of research regarding the effects of domestic violence on children. However, the main emphasis is on interviews with those affected, who speak about their experiences years later. The sensitively analyzed interview material provides insights into coping strategies and resources, but also offers deep insights into the impact that these childhood experiences had on the identity development of the young adults.
