This skull identification book is intended to fill a gap in the literature on the identification of native mammals with extensive texts and numerous detailed illustrations. It is aimed at a large circle of users: zoologists, palaeontologists, archaeologists or veterinarians, but also teachers, hunters and interested laymen. Only a few scientific terms or terms from the language of hunting are used in the text and the key. The book deals with 57 species or taxa of central and large mammals of Central Europe. These include 36 originally native species and nine naturalized species. Golden jackal or elk appear again and again in Germany. Of seals and whales, only those species regularly found in German coastal waters are listed.
