Mit Nonchalance am Abgrund

The New Munich Group represented one of the most interesting movements in German cinema between 1964 and 1972. The art of these films, which remains underappreciated to this day, was to look the then-emerging neoliberal abyss squarely in the eye while remaining composed. Marco Abel highlights the affect of nonchalance in these films in his study and presents it as an aesthetic stance that embodied a leftist attitude, which not only criticized the political left of the time from the left but also playfully subjected the emerging social changes to critical examination. For this first-time analysis, he also allows the filmmakers themselves to have their say.
