Product details

Although many people suffer from misophonia, the term itself is still largely unknown - unfortunately also among doctors and therapists. Misophonia refers to when certain sounds, whether loud or quiet, provoke an extreme emotional reaction such as anger or disgust. Often, it is eating and chewing noises that act as so-called triggers, but in principle, any repetitive sound can be a trigger. Misophonia often begins at the onset of puberty and can drastically worsen if it is not recognized and therefore not adequately treated. Unlike phobias or compulsions, attempting to endure the stress-inducing sounds leads to a deterioration of the condition and the addition of further triggers - possibly even visual ones - to the existing ones. The attempt to avoid triggers drives those affected into social isolation; they feel completely misunderstood and helplessly at the mercy of their extreme feelings. Thomas H. Dozier has been researching misophonia since 2012. In this book, he explains it scientifically yet in an easily understandable way and particularly focuses on treatment options. It is indeed possible to manage misophonia and to significantly reduce the suffering it brings.
