In his Hamburg years from 1767 to 1769 Lessing reached a high point in his creative work. His Minna von Barnhelm, published in 1767, changed the German literary landscape and since then has shaped the expectations to be placed on a comedy. The Hamburg dramaturgy, begun in May 1767 and completed in the spring of 1769, put literary criticism on a new footing and determined drama-theoretical reflections up to Naturalism and Brecht. Wie die Alten den Tod gebildet (How the Ancients formed Death) from 1769 opens up the antiquarian studies, which were on the upswing, to an explosive religion-critical perspective. All major works and the smaller writings of this period were edited from the first prints and commented on in detail. Three of the most important and still most effective works in the media of poetry, literary criticism and antiquity in one volume: Minna vo.
