Minarett

Nadschwa grows up in a privileged, Western-oriented upper-class family in Khartoum. After a coup, the student flees with her mother and brother into political exile in London. She loses her wealth and soon also her parents. Once, she had dreamed of marrying a wealthy man and starting her own family. Now, she is on her own and has to start over from the bottom. She works as a maid and cleaner for wealthy families, fighting for her independence. She befriends the women of the Muslim community and finds a new home in faith. When she meets Tâmer, the serious and devout brother of her employer, she must make a choice. "Minaret" compellingly and insightfully tells the story of migration, social decline, and the religious community as a place of home and independence.
