In an unprecedented series of attacks, 130 people were killed and another 683 injured in Paris on November 13, 2015. The perpetrators were paramilitary trained and equipped with machine guns and explosives, among other weapons. To address the fear that such terrorist situations could arise at any time in Germany, the largest wave of police militarization since the 1970s was initiated in the country. Police officers are now being equipped in some areas similarly to soldiers trained for combat. This work examines whether and to what extent the police may adopt characteristics of military threat prevention. It turns out that the principle of separation and fundamental rights impose strict limits on the militarization of the police.
