Microorganisms or microbes are tiny living organisms that can only be seen with a microscope. They are also referred to as microscopic organisms, as they are only visible under a microscope. They make up nearly 60% of the living matter on Earth. This diverse group includes bacteria, viruses, fungi, algae, and protozoa. Microorganisms can be found everywhere on Earth, including in soil, water, the atmosphere, animals, plants, and humans. The atmosphere is the only place where microbes cannot reproduce. All other living cells on our planet pale in comparison to their total number. Microbes can be both beneficial and harmful.
