Migration is a fundamental driver of social change. Particularly in the second half of the 20th century, the immigration societies of Europe were shaped by a variety of cultural and social movements initiated or supported by migrants. Through informal networks, grassroots initiatives, alliances, and self-organizations, migrants fought against social inequality and racist discrimination, as well as for their recognition and the right to stay. This volume offers a comprehensive insight into the history of migrant self-organization in West and East Germany, as well as in Belgium. In ten contributions, historians, sociologists, and trade unionists examine the strategies and institutional developments of migrant self-organizations in their interaction with other societal actors. The focus is particularly on collaboration with trade unions and urban social movements. The local studies incorporate sources from established archives as well as records from social movements and self-organizations, emphasizing the significance of migrant struggles for the social history of Germany and Belgium. This volume was created in cooperation with the Munich City Museum.
