Michael Flöer

In the area of the Ennepe-Ruhr district and the cities of Bochum and Herne, around 220 place names are documented before 1600. The fourteenth volume of the Westphalian Place Name Book documents this diverse and multi-layered place name landscape on the basis of selected evidence for the development of each individual name and analyses them linguistically. This means that a further part of the South Westphalian settlement name inventory is now available in scientific form. The material is important for research into regional and settlement history, cultural geography and genealogy and, last but not least, is of interest to anyone interested in the history of their home region. Secondly, it serves as a building block for the overall linguistic analysis of the settlement name landscape of Westphalia as part of the research project "Place names between the Rhine and Elbe".
