Product details
Zvi Yavetz, professor emeritus of ancient history at the University of Tel Aviv, describes his childhood and early youth in Cherniv. Born in 1925 to Jewish parents, he grew up in a time of upheaval, when the "old world" of the imperial and royal family was being transformed. Monarchy, in which an eventful literary life, in which languages and peoples lived together, marked everyday life in Czernowitz, was coming to an end. In moving pictures Zvi Yavetz brings the long gone world of the 1930s and 1940s to life. With impressive words in "Czernowitz German" he describes the coexistence, but also the differences of the intellectual homeland of Ukrainians, Romanians, Germans, Poles and Jews. Before the eyes of the reader, the picture of a world long gone, a cultural metropolis without equal, emerges. The history of the city of Chernivtsi and its people is the story of an egg.
