Melancholie und Gesellschaft

Product details
Lepenies' study on melancholy and society first appeared in 1969. Melancholy is presented as a socially conditioned phenomenon - even and especially where melancholic behavior appears as an escape from society. The sources used are of different nature: the novel stands next to utopia, next to sociological analysis the aphorism. This disparity is enforced by the subject matter: neither melancholy nor utopian thinking and boredom can be attributed to a single discipline and processed in it.
